More than 150 million photos have been shared on Instagram, the iOS platform that launched less than a year ago in October 2010.
Instagram is a free iOS application with retro-style filters and uploads to its own social network, Facebook, or Twitter.
The small firm says its offers “a way for people to easily share their lives through photos taken on their iPhones,” and adds that “more than 7 million people from all around the world share photos on our platform…. at a rate of 15 photos per second.”
The traffic pales in comparison to Facebook itself, of course, which also offers mobile capture and uploads, but Instagram reached this milestone faster than such sharing sites as Flickr.
The service as yet has no revenue stream.
Meanwhile, image sharing website Flickr now hosts 6 billion photos.
The site, owned by Yahoo, says uploads have been increasing 20 percent year-over-year for the last five years.
